Don Edward Strickland, husband, father, musician, gardener and college administrator, passed away Nov 14th at the Pavilion of Bermuda Village in Bermuda Run, NC. He was 86. Born in Dothan, Alabama, he moved to Tallahassee, FL at a young age. There he received his elementary education at FSU Developmental Research School and graduated from Leon High School. Further education included a bachelor’s degree in accounting as well as Master’s and Ph.D degrees in higher education, all from Florida State University.

He began his career in college administration at FSU, where he was head of the auditing department. He then accepted the position of Vice President for Business Affairs at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. He finished his professional career at Brevard College, again as Vice President of Business Affairs, in Brevard, North Carolina.

Don married his childhood sweetheart, Betty Gibson Brown and they enjoyed 64 years of matrimony. He was an active Presbyterian serving both as deacon and then elder for many years in Tallahassee, Florida and Jackson, Mississippi. His baritone voice blessed the ears of many as he sang in the church choirs, Christmas masses and SPBSQSA (Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America).

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Bonnie Ruth Strickland and his parents, LM and Myrtle Riley Strickland. Surviving him are his wife, Betty of Winston Salem, North Carolina, his daughter, Rebekah Gibson Strickland of Atlanta, Georgia and daughter, Melanie Anne Strickland Renfroe (Wm O Renfroe Jr.) of Mocksville, North Carolina. Two grandsons, Daniel O’Brien Renfroe and Edward O’Brien Renfroe, survive as well as a brother, Roy Strickland (Marie) of Tallahassee, Florida. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Don’s sweet smile, witty humor and gentle disposition will be missed by many – from close family members to those that barely knew him. Even when ill he would smile and say thank you.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Roselawn Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida.
