Alberta Joan (Skjelver) Pope was born March 5, 1928 to Albert and Josie Simon Skjelver on her father's farm northwest of Inavale, Nebraska in the Catherton Precinct. She departed this life on Friday, November 18, 2016 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 13 days.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Zion Lutheran Church south of Campbell. She attended North Star school district 66 south of Campbell. The school was started by her grandfather Skjelver as a Christian School to teach English to the children of Scandinavian immigrants. Alberta graduated from the Red Cloud High School with highest honors in 1945. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in June of 1945, and studied nursing at Hastings College, Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ingleside Psychiatric Hospital near Hastings and Veteran's Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas. She graduated from the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 as a Registered Nurse.

Alberta was united in marriage with Edsel L. Pope on January 16, 1949 in Red Cloud. This union was blessed with two children, Mary Jean and John Edward. They spent all their 53 years together in Red Cloud. She worked 16 years as a Registered Nurse at the Webster County Community Hospital.

After being a member of the First United Methodist Church for many years, Alberta returned to the religion she grew up in and joined the Zion Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod in Red Cloud on April 21, 1996.

She spent her happiest hours with her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the time of her death she was also a member of the Zion Bible Study, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, the American Legion Auxiliary, Webster County Museum and the Mary Lanning Nurses' Alumni.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edsel, on April 26, 2002; brothers, Robert and Raymond Skjelver; sister, Mary Ann Johnson and great granddaughter, Josie Renee Jolly.

Left to treasure her memory are her daughter, Mary Jean Brumbaugh and husband Curt of Red Cloud; son, Dr. John Pope and wife Karen of Windsor, Colorado; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Meredith and James Jolly; Adam Brumbaugh and Josi Groski and her daughters, Kailyn and Leia; Alison and Cory Johnson and son, Ryker; Kali and Dhaval Dhayatkar; Lindy and Derek Stegelman and children Ada and Henry. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Cleo Pope and wife Jeanne; sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Pursell and husband Clude Eldon; nieces, nephews and friends.

​Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., November 23, 2016 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Red Cloud with Rev. Chad Boggs and Rev. Ronald Kuehner officiating. Interment will be at the Red Cloud Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday and Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the family present Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
