Statesman, 1st President of Algeria. He served from 15 September 1963 to 19 June 1965. He also served as the 1st Prime Minister of Algeria from 27 September 1962 to 20 September 1963. Prior to becoming president he served in the French Army during the Second World War. After the war he became involved in the independence movement and in 1949 became leader of Organization Speciale, the paramilitary wing of the Party of the Algerian People. He was captured in 1952 but he escaped to Egypt where he founded the National Liberation Front (FLN). The FLN soon began an armed revolt against the French colonists trigger a full scale war between Algeria and France. In 1962 Algeria won independence. He is best remembered for his efforts to gain independence and his struggles to impose socialism on a sprawling and divided country in the anarchy that followed independence in 1962. He was deposed in 1965 in a military coup and was kept under house arrest until 1979. He spent the next ten years in exile in France and Switzerland but in 1990 he returned to live in Algeria. He reentered the political arena soon after his return and headed the Algerian Democratic Movement. He was a critic but did not hold any offices.
