He was born in Lodi on August 24, 1937 to Raymond & Lena (Buchanan)Byers .
He graduated from Lodi High School in 1955, and married the love of his life Barbara May Schuur, on Dec. 17, 1957.
He attended sonar school for the US Navy in the late 1950's.
Richard had worked at the Medina County Gazette for 17 years as a typesetter, and at Summit Hot Type for many years after that. When typesetting was phased out, he went to work at (and retired from) Gerstenslager's in Wooster, OH.
He was a 21 year member of and for a time an assistant chief with the Lodi Fire Department. During that time he was instrumental in helping design the current fire station, and in setting up the first rescue squad program for Lodi. He had resided in Lodi his entire life.
Richard reveled in attending his children & grandchildren's sports activities and was always their biggest fan. He was an avid fisherman, archer, and also enjoyed flying model airplanes and racing slot cars "back in the day". He did not read music but could pick up and play any instrument with style.
He was a man of many words & many talents, an artistic man with a quirky personality. His family was his greatest pride & joy. Even if you did not consider him your friend, he probably considered you to be his. We know he is at peace and happy to be with the love of his life for eternity.
Surviving are his 4 children:
8 grandchildren-
Wayne, Jann, Madalyn, Mieyana, Leigh, Lindsey, Lauren & Lena
7 great-grandchildren
Gwen, Eve, Robert, Parker, Grant, Sophia & Avery
(& one on the way)
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara M (Schuur) Byers, brothers David L & Daniel R Byers, and Granddaughter Makayla Brooks Waggy
