Thomas Carlyle Hurley, age 88, of Newton, was a son to the late Leonidas Lafayette and Sally Parker Hurley. He was predeceased by his brothers, William Hurley of Jacksonville, Fla. and Robert Hurley of Lincolnton, NC.
The family moved to Newton when Tom was in the fifth grade. He lived the rest of his life in Newton. He attended Newton-Conover High School where he played drums in the Newton-Conover Marching Band, was a member of the NCHS football team, and was a light-heavyweight Golden Gloves boxer. After he left high school, he served in the US Navy and then in the Merchant Marines during World War 2. After working for NC Dept. of Transportation for almost twenty years as a heavy equipment driver, he attended Gaston Community College in Gastonia. He completed Gaston College's Air Conditioning and Refrigeration four year program in three years and in June 1969; he received his refrigeration and heating license. For over 40 years, he owned and operated Hurley's Refrigeration, Inc. of Newton. Tom was a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church in Newton where he held various positions in the church including Sunday School Director. He was also an active member in organizations which included Masonic Lodge #248 since 1957, A&A Scottish Rite of Charlotte since 1959, American Legion Post 16, Elks Club and VFW. He was an alderman for the City of Newton from 1977-1979; however, he will be remembered for his active participation in supporting the Democratic Party through his physical active support of their political delegates. Tom was the past precinct chairman, past president of the Young Democrats Club, past president of the Democratic Society of Hickory and was a member of the NC Democratic Executive Committee. Besides God and his family, one of his greatest loves was the great outdoors especially the Great Smoky Mountains. He always said there was no place on earth like the mountains and spent years hiking the southern Appalachian Trail from North Carolina down through Georgia. Another example of his love for the outdoors was exhibited through his constant participation in golf competitions even in his senior years. He treasured family time and family celebrations. He was predeceased by his parents and by his older brothers: William Hurley of Jacksonville, Fla. and Robert Hurley of Lincolnton, NC.
Interment in Eastview Cemetery where his ashes will be placed.
The Hurley family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations Services in Conover, NC.
