Sister Mary de Sales Hoffmann, age 73, of Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 22, 2004 at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.
The former Jacquelyn Hoffmann was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Clintonville, daughter of the late George and Marie Grawey Eulrich Hoffmann. She entered the convent in 1944 and professed her vows in 1949. Sister Mary de Sales earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc, and a Master of Arts degree from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. Sister Mary de Sales served as a teacher at St. Anthony, Marinette, St. Mary, Rhinelander, St. Mary, Algoma, St. Paul, Manitowoc, and Holy Rosary, Kewaunee, all of Wisconsin. Since 1968, Sister Mary de Sales has been teaching at Silver Lake College, Manitowoc. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
The Silver Lake College community has lost another of its revered, longstanding faculty members with the passing of Sister Mary de Sales Hoffmann, it was announced to the campus community Wednesday morning. According to Dr. George Arnold, SLC president, the popular philosophy professor had far reaching influence with both students and her colleagues.
"She touched many lives with her ability and gift of helping people to discern truth and a right course for living," he said.
The Rev. Dick Klingeisen, Pastoral Care Director at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, remembered Sister Mary de Sales as a charter member of the Ethics Committee there. "With her background (as a teacher) she provided valuable insights into the discussion of medical moral issues. Her connections with college students were often referenced in her remarks to committee members about the issues being discussed. That is a contribution, which will be greatly missed," he said.
"Sister Mary de Sales was a woman of great sensitivity and concern for others. She deeply touched many lives because of the two passions she had: her great love for her students and her great drive to promote peace with justice throughout the world. She firmly believed in the intrinsic goodness of each person. Throughout her many courses in ethics, she not only assisted students in making sound ethical decisions in their own lives, but broadened their thinking on issues of peace and justice locally and globally. She believed that each one of us can do a little to bring about peace and justice. She did more than a little in the many outreach projects she promoted since 1972 when she took over the Campus Ministry Program at SLC," said Sister Lorita Gaffney, faculty college.
