Allen's date of passing was recorded by the Japanese Army as being the above date. The U.S. Army recorded his date of passing as January 22, 1945.

Allen served as a Lieutenant Colonel, 62nd Infantry, 61st Philippine Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Windham County, Connecticut prior to the war.

Allen was a Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, Class of 1928.

LTC Thayer became a POW of the Japanese Army during the "Fall Of the Philippines" in 1942 and was held at the Japanese POW Camp 2, Davao, Mindanao, Philippines 7-125.

While a POW in the Philippines, in December 1944, he was boarded onto the Oryoku Maru for transport to Japan. The ship was sunk by American planes at Subic Bay, Philippine Islands, on December 15, 1944.

LTC Thayer survived this sinking and was boarded onto the Enoura Maru which reached Takao Harbor, Formosa (Taiwan). While docked the Enoura Maru was bombed by American planes on January 9, 1945, killing many of the POWs.

Again, LTC Thayer survived his sinking.

On January 11th, two days after the bombing, the surviving POW's carried the dead from the holds. The bodies were buried in a mass grave on Formosa. After the war, the remains they found were reburied at the Punchbowl in Hawaii.

LTC Thayer then "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army in Formosa.

Allen was awarded the "Silver Star", Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart and the Prisoner Of War Medal.

LTC Allen Thayer also has a "Cenotaph" in the Riverdale Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia. His wife Marjorie was originally from that area.
