First grave in McBride Cemetery. Many McBride family members are buried in this cemetery.

History records that one Sunday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. McBride were walking in the woodland near their cabin with one Mr. Jim Massey, who owned the greater part of the land of this Neighborhood and who was trying to sell the McBrides the tract of land. Suddenly Mr. McBride pointed to a beautiful spot beneath a large tree and remarked, "When I die I want to be buried there." It was only a few months until he did pass away, and was buried at the spot he had selected.
Soon after his death, his family made a deed to the County for two acres of ground to be used as a community burying ground. And at this date there have been 679 persons buried in this cemetery. An old deed in the possession of J.C. Brown shows that Mr. and Mrs. McBride homesteaded their nearby homestie on July 16, 1843. It is said Mr. McBride walked to Springfield to obtain this land from the Government Land Office.
Mrs. Rebecca McBride lived until 1900, being 80 years old when she passed away.

While it is said that William McBride died in 1861 that cannot be true. He must have died before December 11, 1857 as that is the day his will was probated. His widow was married to Jesse Hickman on January 13, 1859 and they have a new baby enumerated with them on the 1860 Laclede Co., Missouri census as well. Nobody knows when William McBride truly died but it was before 1861.
