LONG ILLNESS ENDS FOR ELIAS W. DOWELL
RETIRED FARMER OF AVALON AREA WAS 83
The death of Elias William Dowell, 83, occurred Saturday evening at 4:30 o'clock following a prolonged illness. Mr. Dowell had been residing at the Elliott nursing home 1521 Clay street, for the last nine years. He had been in failing health all that time and seriously ill the last two weeks.
Elias William Dowell, a son of the late William and Elizabeth (Duffield) Dowell, was born in Linn County Feb. 4, 1870. He was educated at the Thorpe school near Eversonville and married Miss Minnie Davis in January of 1892 at Wheeling. For most of his adulthood, Mr. Dowell farmed in the Avalon community and moved to Chillicothe nine years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving Mr. Dowell are six children, Mrs. Ralph (Alta) Castle of Chillicothe, George Dowell of Kansas City, Rudy Dowell of Yuma, Colo., Cleo Dowell of Rockford, Colo., Arthur Dowell of Needles, Calif., and Mrs. Marguerite Helvie of Farmington, New Mex.; two sisters, Mrs. Sally Mace of Wheeling and Mrs. Susie Thomas of Chillicothe; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His parents, wife, four brothers and two sisters preceded Mr. Dowell in death.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of the Norman Funeral Home Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock with the Rev. Mrs. Olive C. Fay officiating. Interment will be made in the Dowell family lot in the Avalon cemetery.
