Our Grandmother & a really super lady! Winnie was the daughter of Francis Marion Rumble, Sr & Elisabeth Scott Rumble; sister of Ruth, Martha, Walter, Francis & Clarence; wife of Samuel Dornon Reynolds, Sr; mother of two sons, Sam Jr & Walt; grandmother of eight & great grandmother of eighteen.
Winnie was raised in Rutledge, PA and graduated from Swarthmore High School. On 4 June 1928, she earned a B.A. in English at Swarthmore College.
During times of rationing during WWII, Winnie made clothes for both her boys. She continued sewing up until the time some of her oldest great grandchildren were born, making blue or pink bath wraps for them. She taught her oldest granddaughter to sew so well, she could make her own prom dress.
She volunteered at the Swarthmore Public Library and F.I.S.H. She was also very active in Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore, participating in the Altar Guild, Knit Wits and the Thrift Shop.
Her hospitality was legendary. Family dinners were made from scratch, including dessert. They often included vegetables and seasoning from her own garden. Visiting family members usually stayed at Winnie's house. As kids we enjoyed a closet full of the neatest toys upstairs to play with. During a post-college transition, I stayed with her for over a month. (What can I say-she was tolerant, too)
Not long after Sam's death in 1969, her sister Ruth moved into the house. Later when Ruth's health was failing, Winnie cared for her for years unitl Ruth's death in 1985.
Winnie remained healthy and active well into the mid 1990's. Each summer she swam at the Swarthmore Swim Club and was part of the 1000 Lap Club until her early 90's.. Members would have to swim 1000 laps in a season, between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year.
A failing memory and need for 24 hour care necessitated her residency at a very nice assisted living facilty for about eight years, until her death in 2005.
Her funeral at Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore was attended by family and friends from many parts of the U.S., who gathered to share fond memories of a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
