Our Granddaddy, who left us way too early. Samuel D. Reynolds, Sr was the son of William Reynolds & Louisa Waters Reynolds; brother of Jessie, Martha, William & Jim; husband of E. Winifred Rumble Reynolds; father of two sons; grandfather of eight & great grandfather of eighteen.
Sam was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. His family were members of Hope Presbyterian Church at 33rd & Wharton in Philadelphia (of which his grandfather was a founding member). He graduated from the South Philadelphia High School for Boys in 1919.
In spring of 1921, his family moved to Rutledge,PA.
In 1924, he completed the Westinghouse Electric Corporation Apprentice Training Program. He recieved one of the first George Westinghouse Scholarships used to attend Towne Scientific School, University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1928.
He married Winnie Rumble in 1931. They resided in Rutledge until 1952, when they moved into their home at 6 Benjamin West in Swarthmore, PA. He had designed the home & his brother Bill's ailing construction company built it. This was a most wonderful house.
He worked most of his adult life in various positions at the Philadelphia Electric Company, except for a four year leave of absence to serve in WWII.
Though he was too old for enlistment for WWII, his determination to serve brought him to the US Naval Reserves, where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant. He served as a Senior Engineering and Repair Officer at Dutch Harbor Alaska and Midway Island Submarine Bases. He later became Executive Commander of the Midway Base. By the conclusion of his service, he was commissioned Lt Cmdr. At the end of the war, he was retired with the rank of Commander.
Upon conclusion of his reserve duties, he returned to the Philadelphia Electric Company. In 1956, he was the Engineer in Charge of the Power Plant Section. He retired in April 1968. The love and respect of his co-workers was evident in the design of his retirement certificate, which included artwork not only of the power plant, but a submarine and other references to his military service.
In 1955, he worked extensively on family trees for both his and Winnie's families. I frequently refer back to his data and notes in my research. They continue to be useful in additional research. I also feel like I'm working with him when I use them.
