Alton "Al" D. Gardner Sr., 65, of the 2400 block of Sadler Court, died Oct. 5, 2000, in a local hospital.

Born in Eden, Texas, he retired after 20 years with the U.S. Navy. He then retired after 20 years from civil service. Mr. Gardner was a member of VFW Post 392, Fleet Reserve Association and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Bryant Gardner; a stepdaughter, Donna Conner of Chesapeake; a son, Doug Gardner of Virginia Beach; two stepsons, Eddie Styron of Atlantic Beach, N.C., and Larry Bryant of Chesapeake; two sisters, Nancy Crow of Jacksonville, Texas, and Betty Archer of Dallas, Texas; a brother, James Gardner of Dallas; two grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and eight step great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Janice Parker, and a stepson, Richard Styron.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel.
