Mathilda ‘Tillie' G. Fruth
1907 – 2006
Mathilda "Tillie" Gertrude Fruth was born February 2, 1907, to Bernard and Anna (Daas) Roers in Leaf Mountain Township, Otter Tail County. She grew up on a farm north of Urbank, and attended country school. On May 19, 1925, Mathilda was united in marriage to Simon Fruth. Shortly after, they moved to Osakis where they built a gas station, which was a hardware store and handled bulk fuels. In the 1930's they moved back to Urbank, built their home and owned and operated the Urbank Meat Locker and the dance hall. In the 1950's they moved to Alexandria and operated Fruth's Grocery. Tillie also worked at Herberger's, at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital and later at Douglas County Hospital until her retirement in 1974. Even after her retirement, Tillie continued her work with Home Health Hospice Care.

Tillie's interests were in traveling, quilting, sewing, playing cards and Bingo, dancing and spending time with her grandchildren as much as possible. She earned a 1500 hour volunteer medallion for volunteering at Knute Nelson which she loved doing. She sang in the church choir and belonged to the Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers. She attended daily masses for many of her years. She lived a faithful and wonderful life of nearly 100 years. A highlight in her life was on August 12, 2006, when she was able to share her 99-1/2-birthday party with her family and friends at the Millerville Parish Hall.

Tillie enjoyed living at Bethany Home for one and a half years. She enjoyed time visiting with the nurses and playing cards. On November 27, 2006, Tillie died there. Tillie is survived by a son Erwin (Florence) Fruth of Urbank, daughters Lorayne DelVecchio of Brookline, MA and Blanche (Bernard) Dorn of Alexandria, son-in-law Verlee Klimek of St. Paul, 22 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, sister Lorraine Loeffler of St. Charles, along with many nieces and nephews.

Tillie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Simon in 1966, daughter Luella Klimek in 2005, two sons-in-law Harold Koep, Sr. in 1960 and Michael DelVecchio in 2000, a granddaughter Debbie Klimek, great-granddaughters Melissa Haas, Karina Koep and Krystal Koep, brothers Edmond, Willie, Tony and Gary Roers, and sisters Louise Becker and Justine Tuel.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 2, 2006, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Al Ludwig officiating. Tobey O'Brien and Kendon Koep were the readers. Musicians included Kayla Koep, Adolph Wagner, Tom Mulder and Jane Herth.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Casket bearers were Pat Fruth, Gary Fruth, Lenny DelVecchio, Nick Klimek, Stanley Koep, Harlan Koep, Alan Koep and Harold Koep. Honorary Casket bearers were the granddaughters, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
