On Tuesday evening, March 30, 1954, Martin A. Tiegen, 118 Graham Street, Austin, Minnesota, passed away at the age of 69 years, 5 months, and 9 days after an illness of nearly three years.
He was born in Adams, Minnesota, on October 21, 1884, to Andrew O. Tufte and Ragnild Numedalen. His mother passed away shortly after his birth after which time he made his home with the Jim Tiegen family of Adams. He was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Little Cedar Lutheran Church of Adams.
On September 23, 1908, he and Clara E. Njos of Adams were united in marriage. To this union were born four children: Ruth, Adry, Edith and Lillie. His wife, Clara, preceded him in death on May 10, 1944. They resided in the community of Adams until the year 1940 when they moved to Austin.
Shortly after this he was employed by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad at the Roundhouse, and continued to work there until the time of his illness. He resided with his daughter Lillie until last fall when he entered the Butts Rest Home in Austin.
He is survived by his four children: Mrs. R.J. Engel of Springville, New York; Adry Tiegen of Austin; Mrs. John Wade of Buffalo New York; and Mrs. Lillian Eastman of Austin, Minnesota. There are four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Nettie Haroldson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Carl Tufte of Austin; Mrs. Rachel Matteson and Mrs. Clarence Matteson of Adams; Mrs. Ernest Fett of Waltham, Minn; Elmer Tufte of Waterloo, Iowa; and Nordeen Tufte of Austin. There are 11 grandchildren. A brother Henry and a sister Ella preceded him death.
Funeral services were held on Friday evening, April 2, at the Mayer Funeral Home, Austin, with Rev. David Nelsen of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, officiating, and at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church of Adams on Saturday afternoon, Rev. M.L. Witte, officiating. Burial was in the family lot at the Little Cedar Cemetery.
