Charles B. Quackenbush, 66, of Buffalo, N.Y., passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y., after a lengthy battle with Leukemia. "Chuck," as he was known to friends and colleagues, waged a courageous fight with multiple cancers over several years prior to passing in his sleep.
He was born on Jan. 17, 1947, in Jamestown, N.Y., and was a graduate of Jamestown High School in 1964. After volunteering in 1964 to serve his country in Vietnam, he was honored with a U.S. Navy Unit Commendation ribbon, a Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze stars, a Vietnam Campaign Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1967, he went on to graduate from SUNY Fredonia.
Over the years, Chuck enjoyed success as an elementary school teacher, a commercial real estate broker and several years as a legal and scientific research analyst with Arthur N. Bailey and Associates in Jamestown.
Chuck had a passion for reading, travel, barbershop quartet singing, coffee shops, diners and any number of places where friends and strangers would gather to share a hearty laugh, a good story or maybe just to offer an ear to listen. Following his retirement in 2007, he took great pleasure in relaxing at home with family, friends, and his beloved dogs: Vea and Mikey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Helen Quackenbush; and a brother, Peter Quackenbush. Chuck is survived by his wife, Ophelia Quackenbush; daughters: Melissa Talbett of Jamestown, N.Y., and Julie Tipton of Pittsburgh, Pa.; brothers: John "Caesar" Quackenbush and Tim Quackenbush; and grandchildren Lucian Talbett, Meyer Talbett and Henry Tipton.
