James Selvage was born about 1844 in Kentucky. He was reportedly the son of Isaac Selvage and Lois (or Louise) Cole.


He served as a Union soldier during the Civil War.


He was married to his first wife Mary Ann Caudill (widow of PVT Hiram Collins) on August 5, 1866 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. He was the father of Sarah Caroline Selvage (also known as Caroline Collins) and Nancy Catherine Selvage Murnahan.


He wed his second wife Eliza Jane Collins (daughter of George Washington Collins and Lydia Collins) on January 9, 1880 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.


James reportedly passed away about 1900.
