Lena Faye Bell was born July 1, 1929 in Okemah, OK and transitioned to heaven November 13, 2016, at 5:50 A.M. at the Cherokee County Nursing Home in Tahlequah, OK. She was the first of eight children born to Reverend Dee and Sibyl (Stanley) Bell. Shortly after her birth, they returned to Teresita where Faye spent over sixty years of her life. Faye was a “daddy’s girl” and “momma’s helper”. She was always by her mother’s side, helping with anything that needed to be done. She worshiped and adored her siblings, and was a “second mom” to all of them. Her nieces and nephews cherished her. They looked forward to weekends and summer vacations, when they could spend time with her. Many happy memories were created while baking in the kitchen together and listening to her stories.
Faye was saved at a young age and embraced fully Luke 9:23 where Jesus said “if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me”. With Faye it was never about things and self, but rather about being a servant for God and her fellow man. She was active in church as a teacher at a very young age. She also sang in the choir and in a quartet with her beautiful alto voice. At almost thirty years old, she answered the call to preach the gospel and, in spite of many naysayers and critics, she pressed on in “Fay Bell fashion”, always “denying self” for a cause that was so much bigger to her than her feelings.
She was ordained by the White River Association of General Baptist in Taneyville, MO, on September 10, 1963. She helped her brother, Reverend Harold Bell establish and build the East Side Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK in 1963. She was his Assistant Pastor until her father’s death in November of 1976, at which time she moved back to Teresita to care for her mother. She was a faithful Assistant Pastor to her brother, Reverend Jimmy Bell, being duly elected in January of 1977. She served the Lord in this manner, until failing health overcame her, some four years ago. Only heaven will reveal the lives that she touched and souls saved from hell because of her willingness to be different, and her obedience to the call of God on her life. She was indeed a chosen vessel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Once fondly referred to as “Dial-A-Prayer”, Faye provided endless hours of prayers, advice, and support to countless friends and loved ones. She was always available on the telephone line or welcomed a personal visit to her home. No time was ever inconvenient.
Faye was also known for her love of cooking. What a cook! She greatly enjoyed cooking and serving others. She was especially know for her fried chicken and home made pies. She knew what kind of pie everyone liked and tried to make sure everyone was happy. She wanted everyone to eat until full and take the remainder home with them. A typical contribution to the monthly Birthday and Anniversary church dinner was forty fried drumsticks, a gallon of gravy, a huge bowl of mashed potatoes, a large taco salad, home made rolls, four to six pies and a delight dessert. She embodied the traits of both Mary and Martha.
Faye was also instrumental in rearing two children as she worked for a family in Tulsa. This couple had adopted a daughter, Susan and a son, Bruce. She came into their life when Susan was two years of age and Bruce was four. Faye was a big part of their life until they graduated from high school. Although she never had children of her own, Susan and Bruce grew to know her as “Momma Faye”. Some five or six years ago, they came to visit Faye. There were tears of joy and lots of reminiscing and fond memories rekindled. It was a joyous occasion.

Faye was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Dee and Sibyl Bell; one sister, Mary Lou Littlefield; one brother, Reverend Harold Bell; two sisters-in-law, Pat (Puckett) Bell, Dewitt’s wife, and Marilyn (Miller) Bell, Percy’s wife; one brother-in-law, Reverend Bobby Hix, Reba’s husband; and one nephew, Lloyd Ray Bell.
She is survived by her sister, Reba Hix of Tahlequah; a sister-in-law, June Bell, Harold’s wife, of Sapulpa; three brothers, Dewitt Bell of Rose, Percy Bell of Tulsa, Reverend Jimmy Bell and his wife Alpha of Tahlequah, Bill Bell and his wife Helen of Coweta; as well as many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
