Mrs. Mary Hunt Morrill Puffer, 81, formerly a prominent New Albany church woman, died in San Diego, Calif., Jan. 16, according to word received here. She had suffered a broken hip in December and had been bedfast since that time. Mrs. Puffer, daughter of a New Albany dentist, was born in the Morrill home at 1309 East Main now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. James E. Montgomery. The home was the scene of many social functions in earlier New Albany days and it is said Ralph Waldo Emerson was once entertained there. During her residence in New Albany, Mrs. Puffer was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal church and was prominent in musical circles. Although she left 35 years ago, she had continued to send special offerings to her church each year. Mrs. Puffer was a niece of [Justice] S. Morrill, New Englander who as a U.S. senator played an important role in the government affairs. She leaves the husband, Earl Puffer, San Diego; two brothers, Randall Morrill, Los Angeles, and Nat Morrill, Louisville; and a sister, Mrs. Cora Merrill, Los Angeles. - New Albany Tribune 22 Jan 1949
