Fred J. Krause, 82, of Gettysburg, PA died peacefully on August 28, 2014. He was the loving husband of H. Elizabeth (Bailey) Krause to whom he was married for 61 years. They had two sons, Kent of Mobile, Alabama, and Jeffrey of Frederick, Maryland. Fred was born in Hammond, Ind. on September 15, 1931 and was the only son of his late parents, Frederick C. and Mildred A. Krause of Chicago, IL. Fred is survived by his wife and two sons and daughters-in-law, Sandra Krause and Marguerite Krause and five grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew, Michelle, Bradley, and Brendan Krause. He was very proud of his loving family. During his youth Fred attended Bowen High School on the Southeast side of Chicago, IL. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Navy and continued in the Navy Reserve for eight years. He graduated from Illinois State University majoring in special education where he received his B.S. in Education. He lettered in both football and wrestling. Later he obtained his M.S. Ed. from Northern Illinois University in Guidance and Counseling. He took post-graduate classes at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois. Upon graduation he worked on a Special Education curriculum for the State of Illinois. He worked for the Illinois State Dept. of Mental Health at the Dixon State School as Director of Rehabilitation Services. He then accepted a position as the first Executive Director of the California Council for Retarded Citizens. In 1969 he was appointed Executive Director of the President's Committee on Mental Retardation by President Richard Nixon. He continued his federal government service for 28 years. During his career he received many awards for his dedicated service. He has served on various International, National, State, County, and community boards. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at St. James Lutheran Church 109 York St., Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Michael Allwein and Rev. Laura Haupt officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
