CHESAPEAKE – Robert Spence (Bob) Bernard, 73, of 585 Longdale Crescent, Georgetown East, retired Ford Motor Co. supervisor and widely known sportsman, died Tuesday afternoon in a Norfolk hospital.

A native of Princess Anne County, he was a lifelong area resident. He was the husband of Mrs. Reba Harrell Bernard. He retired after 30 years with Ford Motor Co.

He was a member of Swindell Bible Class of Woodland Heights Baptist Church.

He was a member of the National Wildlife Federation, the Virginia Wildlife Federation, Waltonian Gun Club, Norfolk County Gun Club, National Skeet Shooter Association, Tidewater Anglers Club, and Tidewater Coon Hunters Association.

He was a past chancellor and 50-year member of the Knights of Pythias and member of the Dokkies.

Besides his widow, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Judith Bernard Shirley of Chesapeake; three sisters, Mrs. Grace B. Caton of Chesapeake, Mrs. Katherine B. Nicholas of Norfolk, and Mrs. Elizabeth B. Neblett of Richmond; and two grandsons.

A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Woodland Heights Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul D. Moore. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, has charge. The body will be in church at 1 p.m. Thursday.
