Janet LaVelle Chase Harper, 97, of Junction City, passed away November 7, 2016. Janet was born on May 17, 1919 to Truman Arlow and Lola LaVerne Atkinson Chase. Janet grew up on the Truman Chase family farm located on Country Club Road. Their farm was directly across the Willamette River from Skinners Butte Park. Janet attended grades 1 ? 8 at Willagillespie School and graduated from Eugene High in 1937. She went on to earn a BS degree in Home Economics from Oregon State College, later renamed Oregon State University, in 1941.

After graduation, Janet worked in a real estate office in Eugene. During WWII, she taught Home Economics, English, and Science at Vale High School in eastern Oregon. While there, she was also a nutritionist at a Japanese agricultural work camp in Nyssa. Janet spent a summer working at Rockefeller Center and in the fall of 1944, she worked for her father Truman A. Chase, an Oregon State Representative and Senator.

On June 14, 1945 and near the war's end, Janet married her college sweetheart, Thomas J Harper at the Old Post Chapel in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Tom, a Captain in the U.S. Army, had just returned from his tour in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy.

Janet and Tom were married for 55 years and made their home on the Harper family farm in Junction City. Their farm produced various row crops for Eugene Fruit Growers and later Agripac and orchard crops. In addition to being a farming wife and mother, Janet was an owner, business partner, and administrator for the operation and finally retired as its bookkeeper this year at the age of 97. The farm is now operated by a 5th generation of Harpers.

Janet was passionate about music, playing the organ and piano, starting at the age of five. She played her spinet Kimball piano every day and right up until the end. Janet often played at church, weddings, and memorial services for local community members. Every 4th of July she performed a patriotic concert, and her children, grandchildren, and in-laws looked forward to a yearly phone performance of Happy Birthday.

She held memberships in the Girl Scouts of America, Junction City Chamber of Commerce, Lewis and Clark Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Junction City United Methodist Church, Oregon State University Alumni Association and (in her 90s) Junction City Toastmasters Club. She held Presidential posts with the Junction City Business and Professional Women and the Oregon State University Mother's Club. Janet recently attended her Oregon State University 75th class reunion.

A perennial supporter of local organizations and businesses, she always preferred to shop locally and was a frequent attendee of fundraisers and auctions.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband Thomas J Harper on March 9, 2001, her parents, Truman and Lola Atkinson Chase, her brother, J. Leroy Chase, her sisters, Juanita Chase Hewitt Dichter, Ireta Chase Whiteaker and son-in-law Jim Rear Jr. She is survived by her children Marilyn Harper Rear, Warren Harper and Eileen Harper McLellan (Dr. Bruce McLellan), nine grandchildren, a great-grand child and nieces and nephews. In addition, Janet was mom to Anne-Kristen Tinlund, our Norwegian family and ?Grandma? to Josué Reyes Carrillo, Pedro Reyes Carrillo, and Rigoberto Vargas Luna.
