Former Soldotna resident Sandra Laverne (Ward) Hawkins of Gilbert, Arizona died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015 Mercy Gilbert Medical Center in Arizona. She was 66.
Sandy was born Dec. 27, 1948 in Ventura, California to Edna and Robert Ward. She attended Camarillo and Mesa High School and West Anchorage High School, as well as Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho.
Sandy was married to the love of her life Patrick Hawkins for 45 years. After getting married in August of 1969 and a quick one-week honeymoon, her husband went back to serve in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy. During that time she worked at Ventura Community Hospital. In 1971 Sandy and her husband moved to Anchorage and she worked at Providence Hospital. The family moved to Soldotna in 1987, where Sandy worked at Central Peninsula Hospital in Medical Surgery as a unit secretary.
Due to Sandy's health issues they moved to Gilbert in August of 2010.
Her family writes, "Sandy was the most caring and generous person you could meet. She always was happy and smiling at people she worked with at the hospital and people in their time of grief. She enjoyed watching her children grow and compete in sports and activities. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family."
Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Robert Ward.
She is survived by her husband, Patrick Hawkins; children, Christopher, Brian and Hannah Hawkins; grandchildren, Nathan, Luis and Cole Hawkins; sister, Pamela Balster; and nieces Jennifer, Katie, Elizabeth, and Kimberly.
