Carlson, Alta Marie: Retirement Center, Madison, following an extended illness. She was born on Nov. 9, 1908 in Dunn County, WI, the eldest daughter of Levi and Christina Diller. She was raised and lived on a diary farm near Boyceville, WI until her marriage to Clifford C. Carlson, on July 19, 1930 in Boyceville. They moved to West Allis in 1932 where Alta dedicated her life to raising her children and assisting her husband in his educational career with the West Allis School System. She also actively participated in Mt. Hope Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, served as a deacon, was an officer in the sewing circle and ladies aid groups and assisted in other various church activities. She volunteered for many years to deliver Meal on Wheels and to work with residents of a local nursing home. She took an active role in her community as a personal mission to help others to be content and happy and let them know someone cared. She always had a smile for everyone. Alta moved to Madison in 1984 where she entered Tabor Lodge Oakwood to receive assistance with her Alzheimer's disease and to be close to her daughter. She continued to share her joy there as Oakwood employees diligently loved and cared for her as her disease progressed. Survivors include 2 daughters, Marian Balch, Madison, and Ann (Larry) McAlpin, Minneapolis, MN; 2 sons, Lorne (Jean) Carlson, Rochester, MN and Robert (Meredith)) Carlson, Redmond, WA; 5 grandchildren, Virginia Balch, Verona, WI, Marilyn, Sheboygan, Jeffrey (Joyce) Carlson, Minneapolis, MN, Adrienne and Kirsten Carlson, Redmond, WA; 4 great-grandchildren Michael and David Carlson, Minneapolis, MN, Matthew and Breanna Balch, Verona; 2 sisters, Muriel (Allan) Anderson, Palmerton, PA and Gertrude Elstad, Glenwood City and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Alta was preceded in death by her husband Clifford; her brothers Charles and Merle, and her sister Eleanor. Funeral Services will be held on Tues. Aug. 27, 1996 at 1 PM at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, 8633 W. Becher St., West Allis with Burial following at Highland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 AM until 1 PM before the funeral on Tues. Borgwardt Funeral Home assisting the family with arrangements.
