The Mielke's lived in Faribault, Rice County, Minnesota according to the 1880 US Census (listed as "Charlie Milka") with five children listed, William (b 1869 Prussia), Frank F (b 1871 Prussia), Minnie (b 1874 Minnesota), Charles (b 1875 Minnesota), and August (b 1878, Minnesota). The 1900 US Census shows a sixth child, William, who was born a few months after the 1880 census was taken. The 1900 census shows that the oldest five children had moved out of the Mielke home, with August living in Winnebago, Minnesota, and listing "sales" books as his profession. That seems appropriates because in later years he lists "publisher" as his profession.
By 1909 August and Emma are listed as living in Danville, Illinois, with August's older brother Charles and his wife, Mabel L Spencer living on the same street (Grant), and both men listing manager of "The Success Company" as their occupation. In 1922 they both list their company as "Midland Mfg Co."
The 1910 US Census shows Emma and August as having no children.
In 1920 both families still live in Danville, with Emma and August moving to Sherman Street. The 1920 Census shows Emma and August as having two children, Arthur W (b 1913) and Eleanore (b 1915). It then seems that on July 27, 1925 Emma died in childbirth after giving birth to her newborn son Raymond, who also died that day.
About two years later August married Zelma Grounds (born 9 December 1892 in Bridgeport, Illinois). They had no children, and some time after the 1940 US Census they moved to Florida. Eleanore, who was still living with her father and step mother in 1940, also eventually moved to Florida. She married Frank W Fisk, and they are buried in Florida, as are August and Zelma.
His second wife and daughter traveled to Europe, and his son, Arthur W Mielke, became a prominent First Presbyterian pastor.
