James Wilbur Ames, Jr., 86, Chanute, KS, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, in Wichita, Kansas.

He was born in Chanute, Kansas on Feb. 17, 1920, the son of James W. and Elma Taylor-Ames.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Shorter in 1941. She preceded him in death August 12, 1966. In February of 1967 he was united in marriage to Ann Vandiver. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1979. He was united in marriage to Amy June Sherbenou June 14, 1980. She survives, of the home.

He served his country during World War II and served in Germany as an aircraft mechanic on P-47 and P-51 fighter planes.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Chanute.

Also surviving are a son, Robert Ames and wife, Linda, Chanute, KS; a daughter, Linda Powers and husband, Ivan, Thayer, KS; a stepson, Steve Sherbenou and wife, Amy, Wichita, KS; a stepdaughter, Melody Adwell and husband, Roger, Chanute, KS; six grandsons; a granddaughter, four great-grandchildren and several nieces.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.

Burial will be Sept. 18, 2006, in Memorial Park Cemetery.
