Jim J. Ray
Jim J. Ray, 64, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Canyon with Randy Voight, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Mr. Ray was named Jimmie Junior Ray on the day that he was born, July 27, 1940, in Isadora, Mo. Jim passed from this world to be with the Lord and family and friends who'd gone before on September 15, 2004. He was the youngest of 13 children born to James and Laura (Hall) Ray. When Jim was a small boy, his parents passed away. Jim and his sisters, Neva and Alice made their home with their eldest brother, Virgil and his wife Lena. Jim was baptized at an early age into the Isadora Church of Christ.
Jim grew up on the Ray family farm and attended public schools in Worth County, Mo. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1958. His love of horses called him to roping and rodeo events all over the region as a young man. No matter the hand life dealt him, Jim always possessed a good horse.
On March 29, 1979, he married the love of his life, Sharon Pierson, and became Dad to Stefanie and Stacy and the adopted son of Archie and Florine Pierson. In 1982, Jim and Sharon moved to the Texas Panhandle and Jim worked his way up from cowboy to cattle manager at Champion Feeders where he retired in 2003 after 19 years of service.
Jim didn't like the limelight and was never one to talk about himself and his accomplishments. Jim knew cattle and he knew the cattle business. Jim was also known nationwide for his horsemanship and ability to train border collies. His dog, Gus, was never far from his side while working at the feedlot or at home.
Time spent talking, laughing, pickin' the guitar, and singing with his friends and family were cherished events for Jim and all of us that were fortunate enough to share in his life. Jim was so in love with his grandchildren and was proud to share in all of their accomplishments. He was to all of them their biggest advocate and best friend. Like most cowboys Jim wore a western hand tooled leather belt, which bore not his name, but his favorite title, Grandpa.
He was preceded in death by two sons, David and Dennis Potter; and six brothers and sisters, Madelyn Ray, Lucy Ray, Virgil Ray, Ollie Herndon, Tessie Lynch and Neva Olney.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Stefanie Sebranek and husband, Mark, of Garden City, Kan., and Stacy Jackson and husband, Kelly, of Canyon; four sons, "Buck" Joseph Potter of Maryville, Mo., Russell Ray of Stewartsville, Mo., Ronnie Pankau of Charter Oak, Iowa, and Randy Pankau and wife, Sarah, of Pineville, Mo.; four sisters, Helen Roach of Grant City, Mo., Opal Glover of Toronto, Iowa, Betty Wiley of Maryville and Alice Ridge of Grant City; two brothers, Delbert Ray of Stayton, Ore., and Wilbur Ray of Grant City; his grandchildren, David, Cody, Chancey, Aaron, and Alex, all of Garden City, Koby, Britney, and Jory, all of Canyon, Bobbi Jo of Maryville,
Alissa, Austin and Kaitlin, all of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Donna, Dakota, Jason, and Kourtney, all of Pineville, and Michelle and Jessica, both of Charter Oak; and numerous nieces and nephews; his good friend, Nolan Chandler of Amarillo and his sons, Greg of Norman, Okla., and Doug of Amarillo; and a
host of friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 17, 2004.
