Betty is survived by her brother- in- law John McCandless and his wife Helen of Edmond, Ok.
Betty moved to Dallas in 2010 at the age of 90 to be closer to her family. Betty (known to her family simply as “Ma”) was born in Webster City, Iowa. She was raised by her mother Mary Alice and stepfather Carney Virgil Morris in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She attended Classen High School and went to Virginia Intermont and Northwestern University on Debate and Speech scholarships. She married Bill McCandless in 1941, the day after their graduation from Northwestern.
As adults, Betty and Bill stayed very active in Oklahoma politics, loved Sooner football and were proud Democrats. Betty was an active volunteer in many organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Panel of American Women, an inter-racial, inter-religious group of women who helped to peacefully integrate the Oklahoma City School System. She was also active in Meals on Wheels, Planned Parenthood, President of her Sunday School Class and a member of the Foster Care Review Board. She was a member of St Luke’s Methodist Church for 20 years.
She began her teaching career at the age of 52 after getting her Master’s Degree in Reading from the University of Oklahoma. She taught school for 19 years in the Crooked Oak Public Schools in Oklahoma City. She was Teacher of the Year 4 times. She stayed active to the end and at the age of 92 won the putting contest at her retirement community in Dallas. Betty will be remembered by her friends and family as a selfless, fun-loving, caring person who always put herself second and never, ever complained. She loved her family fiercely and is a role model for us all.
Services will be on November 23, 2016 at 11:00 in the Abbey Mausoleum Chapel at Rose Hill Burial Park in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Planned Parenthood, St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Oklahoma City or the hospice organization of your choice.
