Virginia Beach - Doris Marie Blankenship Harvey, 87, of Midlothian, Virginia died on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at The Memory Center Richmond where she had been a resident since 2015. Doris Harvey was born June 21, 1929 in Black Mountain, North Carolina, the daughter of the late John Wade Blankenship and Gloria Blankenship. She graduated from Blue Mountain College in Mississippi with a degree in English and later pursued studies in Library Science.

She married John Hopkins Harvey of Roseland, Virginia on April 5, 1958. Over the course of her career, she worked at the Baptist Foreign Mission Board and as a librarian with Norfolk Public Schools for twenty-five years, before retiring in 1992. In 2000, she and John moved from their long-time home in Virginia Beach to Midlothian, VA. In addition, they spent the winters at their home in University Park, FL from 1992 until 2007.

She is survived by her three children, Beth Marie Harvey and Dana Wells of Midlothian, VA, John Hersey (Johnny) Harvey and Scott Pope, of Tappahannock, VA and James Craig (Craig) Harvey and Jeannie Harvey, of Bradenton, FL. She is the oldest of ten children and is survived by two sisters, Lois and Nana, and six brothers, Joe, Frank, Donald, Ronald, Roy, and Marshall and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and one brother, J.W. Blankenship.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, November 14, 2016 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home, 7661 Patrick Henry Hwy., Roseland, VA 22967, with burial to follow in Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
