Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until February 15, 1946.

Richard served as a Sergeant & Assistant Radio Operator / Gunner on B-24D #42-40525, 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Hartford County, Connecticut and was a member of the Connecticut National Guard prior to the war.

B-24D #42-40525 took off off from Nadzab No. 4 Airfield APO #712 on a bombing mission against Sarmi. They were late in taking off and were suppose to catch up with the rest of the B-24's on this mission. However they, after takeoff, were never seen again.

This crash was determined to be a non-battle related crash based on the headstone at Arlington.

Richard was originally declared "Missing In Action" as part of this flight. However since his remains were recovered his status has changed to "Killed In Action".

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
