Lester Lee Peters, 82, of Hannibal, Mo., passed away at 9:47 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra, Mo.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, Mo. Rev. Tim Goodman will officiate. Burial with full military honors by Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55 will be at Grand View Burial Park, Hannibal, Mo.


Friends and family are invited to Lester’s Life Celebration at a visitation that will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home.

Lester was born Aug. 3, 1934, in Hannibal, Mo., to William Harry Peters and Iva Ruth Babb Peters.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Peters Richards of Hannibal, Mo., and Mary Ruth Peters Sharp (Greg) of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Ruth Peters Cole of Hull, Ill.; six grandchildren, Ashley Garner, Ben Richards, Will Sharp (Emily), Kathleen Sharp, Sarah Sharp and Sam Sharp; close childhood friends, Raymond McKay (Mary) of Arlington, Va., and Dale Cravens (Charlotte) of Quincy, Ill. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eleanor Hilgenbrinck; his twin brother, Louis F. Peters; and two brothers, William J. Peters and John J. Peters.

Lester attended Bird Slough School, then Hannibal High School and later graduated from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, Mo.

Lester was a proud veteran, serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1956. Lester rose to the rank of Sergeant and served as a Drill Sergeant in the Marine Corps. and was a candidate for Officer School.

Lester began his professional career as a school teacher at Ralls County Schools, teaching history in Center, Mo., and coaching both basketball and football. Later Lester pursued a career in public service, serving as the Marion County Collector for 24 years before his retirement.


Always remembered as a great husband and father, Lester put his family first. He enjoyed dining out and traveling. Some of his favorite trips were to New York, San Francisco and Mackinaw Island. Community oriented, Lester worked on many projects over the years to better our area from highway development to Hannibal La-Grange University.

Lester loved politics and developed many cherished friendships over the years through those relationships. He was one of the pioneering members of the area to start Hannibal’s Democrat Days.

Most of all, Lester enjoyed time with family and friends, usually taking pleasure in life’s simple moments like a visit with friends on his front porch.

Lester was a Methodist by faith.
