Fred E. Bruenger, 83, rural Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 at Windsor Place in Iola, Kansas.

He was born Oct. 25, 1923 on the family farm southwest of Iola, Kansas, to Ed and Lena (Schramm) Bruenger.

He attended Onion Creek Country School and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1941.

He enrolled in Kansas State College at Manhattan but left school to serve in the 20th Air Force Division of the Armed Services during World War II. He became a pilot in the Air Force and saw duty in the 309th Composite Group, the group that dropped the first atomic bomb.

He then completed his college education at Kansas State College, receiving a degree in agriculture engineering in 1949.

On June 5, 1949 he married Margaret L. Austin at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humboldt, Kansas. She survives, of the home.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humboldt, KS.

Other survivors include a son, Vern E. Bruenger, rural Iola, KS; and a daughter, Karen M. Bruenger, rural Iola, KS.

Burial will be Dec. 15, 2006 in Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt, Kansas.
