She was born to the late Judge N O Burnaman and Vera Griner Burnaman in Newton, Texas on June the 21st, 1924.
Growing up in Newton, Vera helped with the family business of printing the Newton Herald newspaper, and later lived in Austin while her father served as State Representative. Vera attended grammar school in Newton and high School in Austin and Newton before attending the University of Texas in Austin. With the advent of World War II Vera worked for the Navy and Air Force in Washington D.C., returning to Newton and marrying World War II veteran Charles Cox in 1945. Vera worked for the Jasper Newsboy and First Baptist Church in Jasper while acquiring her Bachelor’s degree from Lamar University. She then taught 5th grade at J H Rowe Intermediate School, finishing studies for a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Stephen F Austin University, and retiring in 1995.
Vera very much enjoyed cooking for and spending time with family and friends, volunteering at the Newton County History Center and the First Baptist Church library in Jasper where she has been a member since 1951.
Vera is survived by one son, Vaughn Cox; one daughter and spouse, Suzette and Terry Pickle; two grandchildren and two great granddaughters.
She is preceded in death by two sons, Shane and Randy Cox.
A Graveside Celebration was held at the Newton City Cemetery, Newton, Texas
