Lewis was first married to Jane Graham on 12 Aug 1850 in Green County, Kentucky. She was a daughter of Silas Graham (1804-1847) and Ann Young (1805-1835). She died 11 Mar 1854.
Starting west with their two small children, as they crossed the Ohio River on a crude flat boat, Jane witnessed a murder---one man chopped another man's head off with an axe. She was with child, had a miscarriage and died, was buried on the banks of the Ohio River.

In the 1850 Green County census Lewis Elmore is head of household 167, and a farmer. His wife is Jane, age 21 years. They have no children.

Lewis then married Martha E. Graham on 22 Oct 1856 in Green County Kentucky. They were first cousins. Martha and Lewis' mothers, Mary and Elizabeth Victor were sisters and the daughters of John and Mary Engle Victor.
Her father, wife of Mary Victor, was Felix Garrison Graham, b. 27 May 1797.
