He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mildred Gray Carpenter and their five children; James Virgil Carpenter of Pinebluff, Rachel Carpenter Byrd of Pinebluff, Janet Lee Carpenter of Greensboro, NC, Charles Curtiss Carpenter of Pinebluff, Francis Delano “Peter” Carpenter of Pinebluff, and his brother; John “Johnny” H Carpenter of Aberdeen. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren; Kelly Byrd Collins, Jessica Crysta Mashburn, Ashley Brooke Carpenter, Adam Bryan Carpenter & Jeffrey Gray Bryd, 2 great-grandchildren; Jordan Vann & Cameron Collins and adopted family members; Charles, Maxine Chaz Howe and Ricky Hooker.
Born & raised in Pinebluff, NC, Virgil was a retiree from Civil Service in telecommunications at Fort Bragg, NC. Virgil enjoyed fishing trips to the beach, assisting his wife with her business; Pinebluff Realty, daily lunches with family and supporting the promotion of beach music through the Carpenter family’s organization, the Carolina Beach Music Awards.
He is preceded in death by his mother & father; W.K. Carpenter Sr. & Effie Tarlton Carpenter & brother; W.K. “Billy” Carpenter Jr.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 16th from 5-8pm at Crumpler Funeral Home on US 1 between Aberdeen & Pinebluff. A service will be held on Thursday, November 17th at 2pm at Pinebluff United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Pinebluff Cemetary.
