Nellie "Charlene" Carter (nee Riley), age 84, of Hobart, passed away November 8, 2016. She was born on January 13, 1932 in Straughn, IN. After graduating from Williamsburg High School, she moved to Indianapolis where she worked at an Optometrist's office. It is there that she met a young medical student by the name of John O. Carter. They were married in 1953 and were never parted until John's death in 2011. Charlene was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She kept busy through the years with her volunteer work at St. Bridget Church and St. Bridget School, where she was a librarian. Charlene was a Cub Scout and Den Mother, a volunteer at The Caring Place and also worked at Lake George Medical Center and Lab and X-Ray. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her family. She and John spent many happy times traveling and socializing with their close group of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dr. John O. Carter, her parents, her brother, Eugene Riley, and beloved granddaughter, Madison "Madi" Carter. Charlene is survived by her three children: Dr. Mark (Cindy) Carter and MaryAnn "Mimi" Carter, both of Hobart, Dr. John E. (Kim) Carter of Valparaiso; five grandchildren: Matthew (Hayley) Carter, Jacob Carter, Katie (Gene) Watkins, Riley Carter and Christine Herr; three great grandchildren: Landon, Aiden and Carter; many loving nieces and nephews. Entombment at Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum, Valparaiso.
