Actor. He appeared in more than 150 motion pictures, but his best known acting role was the secret agent 'Napoleon Solo' in the television adventure series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.". Born into a theatrical family, he moved with his mother, who was a stage actress, to Los Angeles where he took a Masters degree in Theater at California State University. In 1955, he made his first television appearance with a role in the series, 'Medic' and followed that up a year later with an uncredited screen appearance in the biblical epic, 'The Ten Commandments'. His film breakthrough came in 1959 when he was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe in the legal drama, The 'Young Philadelphians', where he appeared alongside Paul Newman. Other films he appeared in were 'The Magnificent Seven' (1960), 'The Big Show' (1961), 'The Caretakers' (1963) and 'One Spy Too Many' (1966) in which he played the role of Napoleon Solo. On TV, he had roles in 'As the World Turns', 'Frontier', 'Father Knows Best', 'Gunsmoke', 'Dragnet', 'The Rifleman', 'Zorro', and 'Wagon Train', before landing the role of Napoleon Solo on 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.', which he played from 1964 through 1968. He would go on the appear in dozens of more films, among them 'Bullitt' (1968), 'Julius Caesar' (1970), 'The Towering Inferno' (1979), 'S.O.B.' (1981), 'Superman III' (1983), 'The Delta Force' (1986), 'Buried Alive' (1990), 'Witch Academy' (1995), 'BASEketball' (1998), 'Cottonmouth' (2002), 'The Magnificent Eleven' (2012) and 'Gold Star' (2016). He also went on to appear in numerous TV series and shows, among them 'The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.', 'The Protectors', 'Police Woman', 'Columbo', 'Trapper John, M.D.', 'The A-Team', 'Murder, She Wrote' and 'Law & Order'. Vaughn, who won one prime time Emmy Award in 1978, died of natural causes.
