from June Killion notes, no date or source
Death of Mary E. Kail
Mrs. Mary E. Kail, the Ohio poetess, died at the Garfield Memorial Hospital, Washington D.C., on the morning of January 28th, 1890. Her children, Miss Annie H. Kail, Mrs. S. B. Flora, and Mr. And Mrs. Jay Wirt Kail, were at her bedside.
Her funeral took place from her late residence on Fourteenth Street at 3 p.m., the 30th.
Rev. Dr. Stakeley of the First Baptist Church conducted the services, reading first the last poem written by the deceased, entitled, “There are no Tears.” After which in fitting words, he spoke of her lovely character and the devotion of her rare talents to the solace and comfort of others and the service of the Master she loved and trusted.
The pall bearers were Maj. R. S. Lacey, Capt. Andrew F. Sperry, Col. W. H. Crowell, and Capt. Edward Pittis, of Ohio; Col. P. G. Clark of Alabama, and Mr. Frank Johnson of Virginia.
The floral tributes were exquisite. They were sent by Senator and Mrs. John Sherman, Representative and Mrs. McKinley, Voltaire Randall, S. G. Kinsley, Mr. and Mrs. George Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Montgomery, Mrs. F. T. Howe, and the Misses Howe, Miss Harding, Miss Olive Lake, Miss Emma Sauter, Mrs. C.M. Ludlow, Miss Lillie Stratton, Mrs. E. T. Chares and the clerks of the Third Auditor’s office.
