Earl was born October 25, 1922 in Wausau, Florida to Cuy and Eva Wilcox Simmons, and Nell was born August 25, 1933 in Bonifay, Florida to John and Maggie Niles Leavins.
Earl and Nell were joined in marriage on December 23, 1955, by their family friend and pastor, Reverend Bill George. They have rarely been apart from each other for 61 years. Their lifelong love for each other and devotion to their faith in God serves as an example for others to follow.
Earl and Nell were longtime residents of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, and members of First Baptist Church. They were actively involved in supporting the community as members of the church, and Nell began a ministry of going into homes, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities in Walton County. Assisted by her husband, she ministered to many in the community who were unable to attend church. Nell continued leading this ministry until her husband’s health required more support. She believed she was called as a wife first, so she turned the ministry over to others in the church.
Nell graduated from Holmes County High School in 1950, and a graduate of Troy State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Nell taught in Holmes County, Okaloosa County, and Walton County, where she retired after teaching for 34 years.
Earl was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the United States Marines. He worked as a supervisor with Centel Telephone Company, now known as Century Link, for 35 years before retiring.
Earl is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Hettie Hood, Lois Hiley. Louise Kirkland, and Joy Everett.
Nell is preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Neil Leavins, and her loving husband Earl Simmons of 61 years.
