Suzanne Marie Atkinson, age 71, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 3rd, 2016, surrounded by her children. Sue was born on March 14, 1945 in Des Moines, IA to Kenneth and Lucille Mennen. Sue graduated from St. Catherine's Academy in Springfield, KY. A natural caregiver, she then pursued her nursing degree at Purdue University. Purdue University is where she met the love of her life, her late husband, Lynn Atkinson. After graduating, they married in 1965. She and her husband changed many stations over his Air Force career, growing their family along the way. Together they had 4 children.
At their last station at Eglin AFB in 1980, they knew they'd found their permanent home. Sue raised her children in Niceville, Florida and was an active and much loved member of the community. Among many other things, she was a homemaker, a soccer mom, a long time employee at Bayou Book Co, and a lifelong devout Catholic.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 40 years. A beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, she will be missed by her children, Kathryn Starrett and her husband Jason, David Atkinson and his wife Monica, Karyn Cooper and her husband Will, and Jennifer Lagoski and her husband Tom; grandchildren, Alexander, JadeAnn, and Zachary Starrett, Owen and Sawyer Atkinson, and Teddy Lagoski; brothers, Richard Mennen and his wife Sally, John Mennen and his wife Sue.
A time of visitation will be held at 10:30 am, followed by a Funeral mass beginning at 11:00 am Thursday, November 10th, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Niceville. Interment will follow in Heritage Gardens Cemetery. Immediately following interment, a reception will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church Parish Hall. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to, Niceville Catholic Outreach 1200 Valparaiso Blvd Niceville, FL 32578.
