Harry Lyle Sturgis passed away on November 8, 2016. Mr. Sturgis was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on January 28, 1921. He was the son of the late James Phonso and Margaret Evelyn Williams Sturgis. He was a graduate of Winthrop Training School, he received his bachelor's degree in textile engineering from Clemson College. During World War II, he served in the European Theater including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corp. Honorably discharged as a Major, Mr. Sturgis was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.
Following the Second World War, Mr. Sturgis associated with Peerless Spinning Corporation in Lowell, North Carolina, eventually leading the company as President. Throughout his career, he focused upon continuous improvement and quality of fine yarns. This focus also led him to work with both Amoco Fibers and Parkdale Mills.
A devout Christian, The First Baptist Church of Lowell was a critical part of his life. A Sunday School
teacher for decades, Mr. Sturgis also served the church in various capacities ranging from singing in
the choir, leading various committees, and chairing the Board of Deacons.
Mr. Sturgis was a lifelong member of the Lions Club and continued to attend meetings until the time of his death. He was committed to improving the vision of those at home and around the world. He was a member of the Lowell Masonic Lodge 590 for more than 50 years.
Family was the center of his life. Teaching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to surf fish was one of his greatest joys and will be one of his family's most treasured memories.
Mr. Sturgis was preceded in death by his brothers James Graham Sturgis, Charles Marion Sturgis, William Ira Sturgis, Leon Phonso Sturgis, and sister Margaret Evelyn Sturgis Baker.
Left to cherish memories are his loving wife of 67 years, Iris Fouche' Sturgis, son Harry Lyle Sturgis, Jr. and his wife Jean, daughters Anna Margaret Sturgis Renfro and her husband Don, Jeanna Marie Sturgis Tiller and her husband Russell, grandchildren Tommy Lyle Sturgis and his wife Laura, Micah Fouche' Sturgis and his wife Kelli, Robert Graham Renfro, Anna Kathryn Renfro Clark and her husband
William, Harryson Weeks Tiller, Noah Grey Tiller, six beloved great grandchildren and his 'big' brother
Thomas Johnson Sturgis.
The family will receive friends Thursday, November 10, 2016 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia from 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM.
A service celebrating the life of Mr. Sturgis will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 11:00 am at
the First Baptist Church of Lowell. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
