Elmer Durwood Baker, 84, of Hitchcock, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2016.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 11, 2016 at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City.
Elmer Durwood Baker was born March 2, 1932 in North Carolina. He served in the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army and went on to become a Bosun in the Seafarers International Union, and he also joined Pipefitter's Local 211 in Houston, Texas. He worked in both careers until 1990, when he retired. He met his future wife, Patricia, in 1958 in Galveston, Texas and married her on December 30, 1960 after two years of courting her by letters written from abroad. This December, they would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.
In 1994, Elmer and Patricia became grandparents and began watching what would begin as one, but would eventually become their three granddaughters for the next two decades. He attended nearly every school function and was an active part in their daily lives. He read them stories from nursery rhyme books from the past, from his backyard along Highlands Bayou he taught them how to fish, toss a cast net and catch crabs. He taught them how to grow vegetables, raise ducks and swing from 30' tall swings in the oak and pecan trees in his yard.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Patricia Ann Baker, his son Steven Elmer Baker, daughter-in-law Tiffany Baker, granddaughters Brooke Savannah Baker, Brianna Paige Baker and Brittany Michelle Baker.
He is proceeded in death by his two beloved daughters, Kimberly Sue Baker and Laura Leah Baker.
