Mr. Pankey died at home on Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, of natural causes. He was 61.
Born on Nov. 29, 1945, in Joplin, Mo., he was the son of Lemuel and Mary (Piatt) Pankey. After growing up in John Day, he graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1965.
He lived in Pendleton while working at the Kinzua lumber mill in Heppner. He later lived in Baker City, then moved to McMinnville.
While living in McMinnville, he worked initially for White City Plywood, which later became Coast Range Plywood. He worked for Multnomah Plywood in St. Helens until it closed, then took a job at Cascade Steel in McMinnville. When Multnomah Plywood re-opened, he returned, continuing to commute from McMinnville.
After a time working as a bartender at the Westward Ho Restaurant and Lounge in McMinnville, he moved to Umatilla in 1987. He married Victoria "Vickie" Tachdjian in Umatilla on June 27, 1992.
Mr. Pankey enjoyed automobiles and automobile restoration, as well as working on his yard and home. He loved spending time with his family and attending family gatherings.
He had a special wink that would put a smile on your face, his family said.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Tamela "Tamme" Pankey and Toni Pankey both of McMinnville; a son, Scott Pankey of Jefferson; three stepdaughters, Missie Spencer, Bobbi Walker and Tracy Walker of McMinnville; a brother, Charles Eugene Digsby of Kentucky; four sisters, Pearl Padgett of Umatilla, Bev Follett of Boise, Bonnie Lemberger of North Pole, Alaska, and Carol Montenegro of Grandview, Idaho; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur, in 1997.
