Fourth child of the five born to Annie M Barker (daughter of William Barker (of the Plymouth Barkers) & his second wife Rebecca Potter) & Lemuel Milk Potter (son of Joshua & Deborah nee White Potter). Her parents were both born in or near Dartmouth, Bristol County, MA (one source says Lemuel was from nearby New Bedford, another says Fall River).

Her father was a whaling captain from 11 May 1859 until 28 June 1863 on the ship "Mary Ann" (which was in operation from 1838-1864). He kept an extensive ship's log of their voyages (see his link). Upon retiring from sailing, he married Annie Barker in October of 1863. The couple moved to La Fox, IL in 1863 or 1864 (sources differ) as did Annie's brother Henry Barker.

Upon arrival in La Fox, her father bought an interest in Frederick Dean's general store (which had originally been opened by Carlow in 1860). In 1868 Fred Dean contracted Potter & Barker to build a grain elevator and in 1869 Potter & Barker built, owned & operated a cheese factory. (The cheese factory was converted into a creamery (butter) in 1877 and later was used as a meeting place & named La Fox Hall). In 1870 Lemuel Potter commissioned carpenters from Massachussets to build a house ("Potter House") & barn for him, both with "porthole" windows to remind him of his sailing days (both still standing). In 1873 Potter & Barker built a new store for Fred Dean: Lemuel later bought him out & the store became known as Potter's (in existence until 2004). Potter either constructed or owned 12 buildings in little La Fox.

Nellie married William DeEstine Finn, who worked for her father at Potter's Store, on June 24th, 1897, Kane Co., IL (a month after her father's death). In 1898 the couple traveled east to visit William's relatives in Woodville, NY (see photo taken at that visit) and in 1899 Nellie gave birth to her only child: Mildred Ruth Finn. Nellie died just a few weeks later.

On a personal note: in the mid 1970's my sister & I (and many of our classmates) made the seemingly arduous journey on country roads from Aurora to La Fox because Potter's was the only place you could find bib overalls (which were all the rage)!
