Gene was a graduate of North Little Rock High School and received an associate degree from Little Rock Junior College (now LRU) before transferring to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR where he graduated with a BSME degree in 1963 and a BSCE degree in 1964.

In 1981, Gene went to work as a civilian with the U.S. Army at Red River Army Depot, Texarkana, utilizing both degrees by working in facilities and construction engineering groups. In 1991, he was one of the first six DESCOM employees and the first RRAD employee to volunteer to work in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He was sent back to Dhahran three more times to close leased facilities and to successfully refute and negotiate compensation for Saudi damage claims pertaining to those facilities. For his service, Gene was awarded the Commander’s Medal for Civilian Service, Commendations for both Exceptional and Exemplary Performance, and the Saudi Arabian Service Medal.

Gene was a member of Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church; served as class administrator for the Texarkana Bible Study Fellowship men’s class, and on the board of directors for Ozark Conferences. He coached winning youth football teams wherever he lived. He joined the Arkansas Officials Association and enjoyed officiating local junior and senior high football games. He was a life member of the NRA, the TSRA, and the Single Action Shooting Society, where he was known by his alias, Amos Dumas.

In April, 2015, Gene was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas. He was a member of the Arkansas Academy of Mechanical Engineers and a retired Professional Engineer in Louisiana.
