Martin Arthur Morgenstern, 102, died November 6, 2016, at his home in Great Bend, surrounded by many people who loved him. He was born September 6, 1914, on the family farm near Galatia, Russell County, Kansas. Martin was the son of Samuel and Lena (Radke) Morgenstern. Martin graduated from Russell High School.
 
Martin was a lifetime Barton County resident living in Galatia, Hoisington, and Great Bend. He worked in the oil industry as a contract pumper and supervisor for Central Petroleum and Shell Oil. In addition Martin was also employed in law enforcement as a reserve officer.
 
Martin was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1942 to 1945. During his time in the service, Martin earned four bronze stars for battles in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was also decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge., World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the EAME Theater Ribbon.
 
Martin was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. He was a member of the American Legion, and was a lifetime member of both the V.F.W. and the Elks Club. He enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, hunting, and playing cards.
 
On December 25, 1938, he married Wilma Moore in Otis, Kansas. They had nearly 73 years together. She preceded him in death on October 25, 2011.
 
Survivors include his three nephews: Kent Gates of Kansas City, Missouri, Bruce Corbin and wife Erin of Topeka, Kansas, and Gary Corbin and wife Sherry of Carmel, Indiana. Martin was also survived by many dear friends, including Keith Lamb, Tera and Leroy Tiemeier, and many wonderful ladies from Elder Care of Great Bend, and compassionate staff of Golden Belt Hospice of Great Bend, all who lovingly cared for him in his home the past four months.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma, two brothers, Ralph and Luther Morgenstern, and a sister, Amanda Morgenstern.
 
Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Reuben Lang’at presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery, with military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard and escorted by the Patriot Guard.
