Nathaniel was the son of Jacob C. Bean and Jane Ford. He married Hattie Hamlet on November 14, 1860, in East Canaan, New Hampshire.

During the Civil War, when he was 22, on August 11, 1862, he enlisted in Company H, 11th Infantry of New Hampshire. Sadly he died of pneumonia in an Augur Army hospital, on June 29, 1864, in Alexandria, Virginia, leaving a grieving wife, who applied for his pension.
