William Morris "Bill" Rutherford, Sr., 93, passed away October 30, 2016.
He was born June 13, 1923, in Delaplane, VA, son of William Jackson and Minnie Elizabeth (Pearson) Rutherford. He grew up in Ashburn, VA., leaving home to serve with the U.S. Army, as PFC, with Co. A of the 877th Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II, participating in the Normandy invasion. Upon returning home, he married Vivian Lee Scott of Leesburg, VA, became an electrician, and raised his two children, Terry Lynn and William, Jr. in Alexandria, VA.
Although retired from the IBEW Local 26 in 1981, Bill still enjoyed working in his trade whenever called upon. Bill and Vivian enjoyed their retirement in Colonial Beach with free time, traveling and their clubs. Mr. Rutherford was a Life Member, Past Governor, and Fellow of the Moose Club; a trustee of the local VFW; and a member of the American Legion and was known for his sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his son, Bill, Jr., daughter-in-law Shelly, son-in-law Ronnie Howard, four grand children, Lori Anne Howard, Shawn Grazier, Danielle Shughart and Christina Rutherford, a great grandson Christopher Dominguez, and many nieces, nephews, and a host of good friends.
Visitation will take place on Sun Nov 6 at Storke Funeral Home, Nash and Slaw Chapel in Colonial Beach from 3 to 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Mon, Nov 7 at the same location at 10:30 a.m. officiated by Pastor Patrick Walker. Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery with military honors. At the family's request, the "Patriot Guard Riders" will participate in the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the National D-Day Memorial, 3 Overlord Circle, Bedford, VA 24523.
