He was the second son of Colonel James Coleridge JP, of Heath's Court Devon, and Frances Duke Taylor, of Islington North London, daughter of Bernard F. Taylor and heiress of Robert Duke.

On August 7, 1818, he married Mary Buchanan, the second daughter of Rev. Gilbert Buchanan, vicar of Northfleet in Kent and rector of Woodmansterne in Surrey.

He was educated at Eton, Corpus Christi College, and Exeter College Oxford. He was the author of "A Memoir of the Reverend John Keble."
