Viola I. Phelps of Caro, age 106, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Carey's Young At Heart AFC Home in Caro. Viola was born June 22, 1910 in Detroit, the second oldest of twelve children born to the late Friedrich and Minnie (Wegert) Freewald.
At age nine, the family moved to Franklin, and in 1928 they moved to the farm in Vassar. When her mother became sick, Viola joined her family. After her mother recovered, Viola returned to Detroit to take care of her grandmother Wegert. When she learned of a job at the Millington Hotel, she took it and met her future husband, Emerson Kowitz, there. They were married January 25, 1930 in the hotel office, and he preceded her in death in 1963.
Viola was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and later was a founder of the Community of Christ Church in Caro. She married Ollie Phelps, and he also preceded her in death. In addition to her very active church life, Viola was a great wedding cake decorator, and enjoyed making crafts for the church bazaar. She also loved raising her family, playing the organ, singing in the choir, and her flowers.
Left to cherish her memory are four daughters and their spouses, Delores Baur of Vassar, Shirley Burton of Lapeer, Carol & Wayne Hoeldtke of Vassar, Nancy & Allen Hildinger of Vassar; daughter-in-law, Shirley Kowitz of Fairgrove; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great- grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Akerman of Vassar, Betty Wummel of Vassar, and Maxine Conway of Bridgeport; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria & Jerry Torrey; a son, Keith Kowitz; son-in-law, David Burton; and her remaining siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home with Elder Jerry Bernhardt officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw.
