French Nobility. Cardinal and Duke of Bourbon and Auvergne. Also known as Charles I Cardinal de Bourbon. As he had two older brothers that secured the line of succession he became a cleric. In 1444 he was elected Archbishop of Lyon and was confirmed in this post by the pope two years later. He was ordained as a priest in 1466. From 1465 to 1475 he was papal legate in Avignon and was created cardinal in 1476. He became bishop of Clermont and Governor of Paris and the Ile-de-France in 1475 and was member of the royal council of King Louis XI. He succeeded his older brother Duke Jean II who died in April 1488 and reigned until his own death five months later. He had a daughter by Gabrielle Bartine, Isabelle de Bourbon who was legitimized in 1491 by the king. She married Gilbert de Chantelot, seigneur de La Chaise and died childless in 1497. He was succeeded by his younger brother Pierre II de Beaujeu.
